Installation FAQ
We first look at the site and get an idea of where everything is going, then design the system and submit it to the local fire marshal for approval.
Once approved, we are issued a permit and can begin the work. Most systems can be installed in 1-2 days. There are times that we will need to work closely with an electrician who can wire in the shut down or other relays to the system.
After the kitchen hood is installed by your contractor, we test it ourselves before calling in the local fire marshal to do a final inspection.
Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s website identifies what they are looking for on top of NFPA 96 codes. All manufacturers incorporate standard codes into their system design.
We only install the fire suppression side of it. The customer would need to go through a mechanical contractor for the hood installation.
We can install and service kitchen hood systems including:
- Ansul
- Kidde
- Pyro-Chem
- Badger
- Buckeye
- Guardian
- Protek
1-2 days. Timelines are difficult in this industry because it really depends on the design and permit process (can take a week or a month). Then it depends on when the hood is installed by customer’s contractor, otherwise we can’t complete the suppression side of things.
Yes, as long as the retrofitting components are UL300 listed and listed for that brand. You cannot mix and match system components from another brand – ex: a Kidde nozzle cannot be on an Ansul system.

Maintenance FAQ
Atomic Fire Protection conducts semi-annual inspections, replacing:
- Fusible links every inspection
- Nozzle caps (as needed)
- Cartridges (replaced annually)
We also clean the fire system components each visit.
We do not clean the actual hood, just the suppression components.
Semi-annually
Depending on how long the repair will take, some we can do on-site during routine maintenance. Some repairs we need to quote out and have approved.
We keep a few system tanks at our shop ready to go for this reason and our techs are on call for after hours service.
Typical issues we see include customers adding appliances, thinking it’s okay as long as it’s under the hood. The nozzles are listed for particular appliances only and spacing is very important.
During inspections, we use a thorough checklist that follows NFPA standards.
