Installation FAQ

What does your commercial kitchen fire suppression / hood installation service include?

We first look at the site and get an idea of where everything is going, then design the system and submit it to the local fire marshal for approval.

Once approved, we are issued a permit and can begin the work. Most systems can be installed in 1-2 days. There are times that we will need to work closely with an electrician who can wire in the shut down or other relays to the system.

After the kitchen hood is installed by your contractor, we test it ourselves before calling in the local fire marshal to do a final inspection.

What are the NFPA and local fire code requirements for kitchen hood installations?

Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s website identifies what they are looking for on top of NFPA 96 codes. All manufacturers incorporate standard codes into their system design.

Can Atomic Fire install both the kitchen hood and its fire suppression components simultaneously?

We only install the fire suppression side of it. The customer would need to go through a mechanical contractor for the hood installation.

What types of commercial kitchen hoods do you install for restaurants and food trucks?

We can install and service kitchen hood systems including:

  • Ansul
  • Kidde
  • Pyro-Chem
  • Badger
  • Buckeye
  • Guardian
  • Protek
How long does a typical restaurant kitchen hood installation take?

1-2 days. Timelines are difficult in this industry because it really depends on the design and permit process (can take a week or a month). Then it depends on when the hood is installed by customer’s contractor, otherwise we can’t complete the suppression side of things.

Do you offer installation upgrades for existing kitchen hoods, including retrofitting fire suppression systems?

Yes, as long as the retrofitting components are UL300 listed and listed for that brand. You cannot mix and match system components from another brand – ex: a Kidde nozzle cannot be on an Ansul system.

Semi‑Annual Maintenance & Testing Services

What we do Every 6 Months:

  • Fuse‑link replacement
New heat links per manufacturer spec
  • Cylinder weight & pressure check
Swap or replace tank if recharge is required
  • Nozzle cap replacement & line cleaning
Prevent grease buildup that blocks agent flow
  • Pull station & micro‑switch test
Verifies fan shut‑down, gas valve closure, and alarm relay
  • Complete reset & certification tag
Green tag for compliance; yellow or red if deficiencies exist
Kitchen hood fusible link caked in grease
A fusible link found on kitchen hoods. We found this on a customer's hood and it is caked in grease. Example of the importance of maintaining inspections: fusible links are supposed to be changed every 6 months. This link was likely 8 years old. Grease acts as a barrier to the link breaking, which activates the fire suppression system.

Maintenance FAQ

What routine maintenance services do you offer for commercial kitchen hoods and fire suppression systems?

Atomic Fire Protection conducts semi-annual inspections, replacing:

  • Fusible links every inspection
  • Nozzle caps (as needed)
  • Cartridges (replaced annually)

We also clean the fire system components each visit.

We do not clean the actual hood, just the suppression components.

How often should commercial kitchen hoods and their fire suppression systems be inspected?

Semi-annually

What does your commercial kitchen hood repair service include?

Depending on how long the repair will take, some we can do on-site during routine maintenance. Some repairs we need to quote out and have approved.

How do you handle emergency repair requests for restaurant kitchen hood issues?

We keep a few system tanks at our shop ready to go for this reason and our techs are on call for after hours service.

What common issues are identified during routine commercial kitchen hood maintenance, and how are they resolved?

Typical issues we see include customers adding appliances, thinking it’s okay as long as it’s under the hood. The nozzles are listed for particular appliances only and spacing is very important.

How do you ensure that your maintenance services comply with local fire codes and NFPA standards?

During inspections, we use a thorough checklist that follows NFPA standards.

What factors determine the cost of commercial kitchen hood maintenance and repair services?

Time and parts
