Installation FAQ
A complete fire alarm system installation includes initiating and notification devices throughout a building or area.
Initiating devices cause an action with the fire panel, triggering an alarm or supervisory mode. These include smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, monitor modules, etc.
Notification devices let building occupants know there is a fire or hazard in the building. These include bells, strobes, horn strobes, etc.
The majority of fire alarm systems are hardwired. There are some wireless options, but they are not favorable, especially if the building is made of concrete.
Fire alarms can be interconnected. We see this in some apartment complexes where wires were run underground. We also see fire alarms / burglary systems connected together. Interconnected fire alarm systems are more common at daycare / child care centers and small office buildings.
Atomic Fire Protection focuses on commercial fire alarm systems, NOT residential.
Installation includes: obtaining drawings, building permits and installing the system based on local and state fire codes.
1. Once the system has an approved setup plan, our techs prewire the fire alarm system.
2. Techs return to connect alarm devices once walls, electric, etc. are completed.
3. We test the system and perform a final inspection with the local fire code official.
The fire alarm system design can vary depending on the occupancy type for the commercial property.
We install most fire detectors and smoke alarm brands. Some brand-specific detectors require programming into the fire panel, but we can replace them on some brands without the need to program.
For specifics on compatibility, please contact us. We are always willing to work with other companies that can program a specific fire alarm.
Firelite offers SWIFT. This is our only option at this time.
Existing buildings: We install in existing buildings, though it sometimes takes a little longer to hide the wires in the walls or run conduit.
New construction: Our new construction projects involve prewiring for fire alarm systems and checking on the status of the building stages. These installations tend to be faster for us than in existing facilities, but our return is often delayed due to other trades having to finish their work first.
Both types require permits and approved drawings.
To work on any fire alarm system in the state of Oklahoma, you must have a technician license and be employed by a fire alarm company.
To obtain a license, you must pass an exam administered by the Department of Labor. The Department of Labor then requires legal documents, runs background checks and will approve a license if the person passes the exam.
A trainee can work under the supervision of a licensed fire alarm technician. The Department of Labor also approves trainee licenses prior to testing but still conducts background checks.

Maintenance FAQ
We offer annual inspections on fire alarms systems. Some locations require semi-annual inspections, which we can also perform.
During an annual inspection, we:
- Test every device to ensure it functions properly
- Perform load tests on the batteries connected to the fire panel and power supplies
Batteries are good for 3-5 years per manufacturer specs. Load testing ensures the batteries will have enough power to operate in case of AC failure.
Fill out a Service Request Form online or call us at (405) 236-3921. One of our licensed technicians will contact you soon.
If there are system issues, the fire alarm panel will let you know. If the panel starts beeping, please take a picture of the problem and contact us for service.
Some problems are intermittent and cannot always be found. If the trouble is not present when we arrive, it makes troubleshooting more difficult.
On conventional smoke detectors, we perform sensitivity testing to ensure they are in an acceptable range. Addressable panels perform their own sensitivity testing.
If a property owner wants us to clean the detectors on a regular basis, we can set up a custom plan.
Most fire alarm panels we install are monitored 24/7. The monitoring company will reach out if the panel has an alarm or issue.
Yes, Atomic offers 24/7 emergency service. We have licensed technicians on call to meet facility/commercial building owner needs. Leave a message with the details of your issue and we will dispatch the appropriate technician.
Atomic offer a 1 year warranty on new installations. Manufacturers’ warranties vary, but we honor their warranties as long as we were the company that installed it.
To update or upgrade old systems, local and state codes may require permits / drawings. Older fire alarm systems can usually be replaced with the same parts. If the panel goes bad and there are no options to replace, we coordinate with the local code official to ensure the building is brought up to local codes. We cannot make a customer upgrade their system from something that was previously approved by the state, but we can make recommendations as needed.
There are a lot of Oklahoma commercial buildings that are underprotected due to being grandfathered in – be sure you’re protected by requesting a free consultation with Atomic Fire Protection!
During a routine check, we test fire alarm devices – ensuring their full functionality, checking their condition, and making sure the monitoring company receives the signals we send from our tests.

Inspections FAQ
During a fire alarm inspection, we place the system in test mode with the monitoring company. We test the initiating devices and ensure the notification devices are functional as well.
While we test devices, we also look at the condition of them. We are looking for any damage, corrosion, etc.
Finally, we load test the batteries to ensure they are in an acceptable range and will operate in the event of AC power loss.
Fire alarms should be inspected annually. Depending on insurance or a company’s safety protocol, inspections may need to be semi-annually.
Inspection service is the testing of fire alarm devices throughout the entire facility. We test any relays tied into the fire panel to ensure they are operating properly. Relays include releasing the access control doors when the alarm is active, shutting down HVAC units to prevent the fire from spreading, and shutting fire doors to prevent fire from spreading beyond fire walls.
Fire alarm testing can be used as a drill to ensure customers have a plan to evacuate.
Our inspection checklists are created from NFPA standards. We receive email updates on any code changes and our licensed techs discuss them during monthly meetings.
- We schedule the inspection date and time.
- When we arrive, we notify everyone in the building that the fire alarms will be going off. If you are a customer with residents or hotel, we notify your manager ahead of time for communication with the residents/guests.
- We then test all fire alarm devices in the facility and ensure they are operational, including a sound test to ensure the horn strobes are sounding and flashing.
- At the end of our inspection, we let you know that the panel was returned to normal (not testing) condition.
- We also check with monitoring to ensure they receive signals so they can alert the fire department in the event of a fire.
The cost depends on the size of the building and how many devices are tied to it. Contact us to learn more.
Yes, the report includes the checklist of items we inspected. It also includes anything that we may have replaced during the inspection, such as batteries.
